HQ16 Quilting Machine During the 2006/2007 season, the Handi Quilter Company in Bountiful, Utah, loaned Quilters 2 an HQ16 quilting machine. The purpose of the loan was to facilitate the production of charity quilts. The machine is capable of quilting anything from placemat size to king bed size items. Stitch patterns can be produced using either free hand design, or pre-designed patterns using pantographs, “groovy boards” and other methods. Quilters 2 offers classes to quilters who are not familiar with the machine. Upon successful completion of the classes, a certificate is issued which permits the quilter to use the machine without supervision. There is a modest class fee. During the first season, approximately fifty quilters became certified. To eliminate student stress, the initial class quilting is done on “doggie” quilts. These are small plain muslin quilts which provide the student with “hands on” experience in an environment where there is no fear of messing up someone’s quilt top. Once these “learner” quilts are completed, they are donated to the Tucson Humane Society for use by the animals. The remainder of the HQ16 classes involve using the machine to produce simple charity quilts which actually go to local charities. Once certified, new machine quilters rapidly gain confidence and competence, and produce high quality charity quilts. Personal quilting is also permitted on the machine, for a modest hourly fee. All fees go into the Quilters 2 treasury, to support the group’s charity work. This partnership between Quilters 2 and Handi Quilter has assured the continued production of large numbers of quilts to meet the needs of Tucson area charities.
